Guys - How to prepare for a Photo Session

A question I am asked frequently from moms of HS gents is "What does he need to wear?". The short answer is for them to think of what comes thru the laundry most often. The longer answer and usually the one most moms are hoping for (most are looking for a change from the everyday) is a bit more complicated. When deciding on photo outfits for guys there are several things that one has to consider such as budget, personal style, options already available and what look mom wants in the print that will be hanging over the fireplace. If the first option isn't an issue then heading down to Houston or even here in town to Buckle, Boot Barn, Cavender's or Academy can get you all set up. For those moms who have to be more aware of such things, the jungle your son calls a room can also lead to some great discoveries (not an option for the faint at heart).

THINGS TO LOOK FOR

  • Proper Fit - No matter how stylish an option, if it doesn't fit well it will not photograph well. Clothing that is too snug will show "everything" and make it difficult to sit or even move the arms. Options that are too large will just look messy and uncaring. For guys with smaller waist or wide shoulders choose button downs that have an athletic or slim cut. Regardless of size avoid anything with pleats.
  • Proper Condition - Even with new clothes keep an eye out for any worn or torn areas. Be very careful with jean/pants as certain areas can be worn and possibly rip during the session. Shoes should be clean and though boots are a favorite having a pair that has lost their shape or stitching never looks good. Inspect each piece of clothing for stains.  
  • Watch out for Logos - Name brands are very popular but instead of having the logo printed across the front choose smaller less noticeable options. Clothing without visible logos is always best.
  • Use Caution with Color - Sometimes a color just does not go well with a skin tone. For those who are pale or have a pinkish/red pigment darker colors usually work best. Also keep and eye on shirts and especially shorts that are very close to the skin color as this can give the illusion of not having anything on at all.
  • Beware of the Glasses - Many young men need assistance with their vision but glasses can be very troublesome. Glare and haze are difficult if not impossible to photoshop. Websites such as www.eyebuydirect allow you to upload a photo and try different styles to see what they look like and are pretty affordable. Buying a set of frames without the lens will solve both the glare and haze issues while still showing a true representation of the senior.

 

 

Clothing Guide for Guys

Although men's fashion falls into several categories, this blog is more about mixing and matching to create amazing looks and still be comfortable. Below are examples of how to match up different clothing options to create a look that "fits".

 

For the Rodeo and Country boys out there style options are pretty standard; however, adding a leather or tweed vest to coordinate with the Stetson can really take a "formal" look form good to WOW!! A wool vest can also add a little something to a button down. For the more casual look throw in a long sleeve Henly along side the cap and T-Shirts. Mix in a pair of work or hiking boots to take the designer jeans to the next level.   (Caution: Western style button downs can get a bit wild so make selections that do not have a busy pattern. Solids are always best but sometimes a guy just needs to make a statement!)
